Key points
- The frequency is the chance of making that hand from seven cards. It is not the chance of winning.
- You may use both hole cards, one of them or neither.
- When the hand ranks differ, the stronger rank wins. Even the highest flush loses to a full house.

- A royal flush is the highest form of a straight flush. This page lists it separately, for a total of 10 hand types. The straight flush probability does not include royal flushes.
- Each percentage is the probability that the best five-card hand from seven cards will have that ranking. It is not the probability of winning. The figures are rounded after counting all 133,784,560 possible seven-card combinations from a 52-card deck.
- High card is less common than one pair or two pair because, with seven cards, matching ranks are fairly likely to appear somewhere.
When the hand rankings differ, the higher-ranking hand wins. For hands with the same ranking, see Comparing Hands of the Same Rank. To see how often you will make each hand by each street, see the Poker Odds Cheat Sheet.
02Choose the Best Five Cards from Seven
Choose the strongest five-card combination from your two hole cards and the five cards on the board. The other two cards do not affect the result.
Cards that make the handRemaining card (kicker)Unused card
You may use both hole cards, only one, or neither. If the board has four cards of the same suit, one hole card of that suit completes a flush.

When You Have Three Pairs or Two Groups of Three
If your seven cards contain three pairs, use the two highest pairs. For the fifth card, choose the highest card from the other three.

If you have three cards of each of two ranks, use all three cards of the higher rank and two cards of the lower rank to make a full house.

03Card Ranks
A is the highest rank, followed by K, Q, J, 10, and 9, down to 2 as the lowest. Suits have no ranking.
A can also count as the lowest rank, but only in an A-2-3-4-5 straight.
A counts as the lowest card only in A-2-3-4-5
04Even the Highest Possible Flush Loses to a Full House
When the board is paired, an opponent may have made a full house.

A royal flush: 10, J, Q, K and A of the same suit. The chance of making one from seven cards is about 1 in 31,000.
Which is stronger, a flush or a straight?
A flush. Even if the straight contains an A, a flush is the higher hand rank.
Can the board play without using either hole card?
Yes. If the five board cards form your best five-card hand, the board is your hand.
