Death leaves something behind in both games. The difference is what you do with it next.

This comparison puts Dead Cells’ equipment and route unlocks alongside Rogue Legacy 2’s manor and heirs. It covers the regular base games, including accessibility settings, without mixing in paid expansions or modes with separate rules.

What each game is

Dead Cells

In Dead Cells, a failed alchemical experiment inhabits new bodies to explore a changing island in side-scrolling combat.

Its Roguevania structure connects regions, with permanent abilities opening more routes through them.

Normally, losing your host sends you back to the beginning, while unlocked routes, weapons and abilities remain.

When potions run low, weigh entering an enemy-filled room against avoiding the fight and looking for equipment ahead.

Investing cells in the Legendary Forge raises the chance of higher-quality equipment. This is a different kind of growth from unlocking new gear.

Rogue Legacy 2

In Rogue Legacy 2, a fallen adventurer’s descendant takes over the next expedition.

You spend the parent’s inheritance on the manor, adding lasting family upgrades while choosing the next heir.

Class weapons and movement matter, but so does the extra gold offered by disadvantageous traits.

Relics change your abilities or playstyle during an expedition, but collecting them puts pressure on Resolve, and death removes them.

The official introduction explains that Resolve below a threshold costs maximum health, making Relic benefits a tradeoff against durability.

Heirlooms earned through trials grant permanent abilities that expand exploration.

For experienced players

Dead Cells

The Training Room lets you summon encountered enemies and bosses to practise for another attempt.

When a less-visited biome offers extra cells and gems, weigh it against a familiar route.

Reviews praise unlocks and learning, but also describe progression rewards as disappointing. Consider whether you enjoy building skill and opening up options through repeated attempts.

Rogue Legacy 2

NG+ lets you choose hazards and boss changes as you raise the challenge, leaving room to change direction after an initial clear.

Switching between class moves such as the Ranger’s Ivy Canopies and the Dragon Lancer’s aerial charge lets you use family growth in a different fighting style.

Reviews praise later challenges but also describe tiring upgrade grinds and repetition. Consider the path to the next upgrade, not just the fact that it survives death.

About the data and reviews

Table values are public Steam data; prices are from the United States store. Review points come from the 100 most helpful reviews of the past year for each game, and only points raised in at least three reviews are included. They do not represent every buyer's opinion.

We read the Steam review texts for each game and grouped matching observations. They form a limited sample, not a measure of all buyers or a satisfaction comparison between games.
