What each game is
Hades
After a failed escape in Hades, you can return to the House of Hades, talk to characters who remember your experiences, and move their stories and relationships forward.
Weapon Aspects give a weapon different properties, which combine with divine Boons to shape the attacks you build a run around.
Daedalus Hammers offer Concentrated Knuckle for the Twin Fists, strengthening repeated hits on the same enemy and making you weigh switching targets against keeping up the pressure.
Darkness develops persistent Mirror of Night talents, and you choose which talent in each pair to activate before a run.
Activating Golden Touch generates income between regions based on how much money you hold, putting immediate purchases in competition with the savings that generate later income.
Choosing Stygian Soul makes Cast ammunition regenerate instead of dropping from enemies, so you plan around recovery timing rather than moving to retrieve it.
Dead Cells
In Dead Cells, unlocked routes remain available on later runs. When your host dies, you normally return to the start and plan another assault on the castle.
An invulnerable roll can carry you through an enemy, but the interval before another roll makes you decide when evasion should also switch your position.
Brutality, Tactics and Survival lean toward melee, ranged combat, or defense and heavy weapons, so you build an approach around the strengths of your weapons and mutations.
If you combine the gold-firing Money Shooter with Gold Plating, a mutation that spends gold instead of health when you are hit, ammunition and protection draw on the same reserve.
When an entrance to The Bank appears between regions, you choose whether to enter immediately and replace the next biome or pass up that visit for the run.
As you advance Boss Cell difficulty, Cursed Biomes can appear. You can face curse-dealing enemies for better equipment or use the exit markers to choose an uncursed route.
For experienced players
Hades
The late-game Pact of Punishment lets you choose adverse conditions for rewards called Bounties, then plan an escape around the constraints you accept.
With Tight Deadline, remaining time carries between regions and clearing a region adds time, so cautious combat must also account for the time budget of the whole escape.
Extreme Measures changes boss encounters, offering reasons to revise familiar responses after you have learned the ordinary fights.
Reviewers describe both renewed interest from Heat changes and fatigue with repeated regions and enemies; the long-term question is whether changing conditions and builds makes refining a familiar escape worthwhile to you.
Dead Cells
Advancing Boss Cells reduces healing supplies between biomes, and Malaise also appears later in the progression, so you need to preserve health for the journey ahead while winning the immediate fight.
When Malaise is active, its gauge rises with time and the enemies remaining, falls as you kill enemies, and stops rising once a biome is sufficiently cleared, linking safe exploration to the pace of clearing threats.
Cursed Flask heals without spending flask charges at the cost of taking on curses, and Demonic Strength can turn those curses into damage, but a curse build still accepts the risk of instant death.
Reviewers describe both the pleasure of discovering synergies or rediscovering weapons and dissatisfaction with a narrow range of effective builds at higher difficulty; for long-term play, weigh the build freedom you seek against the appeal of refining execution.
How they play differently
What carries over, and what do you choose next?

In Hades, you choose between paired Mirror of Night talents developed with Darkness and return home for upgrades and conversations, so failure gives you a chance to rethink the next escape.

Dead Cells keeps unlocked routes open, but losing your host normally sends you back to the start of the castle, where you plan another journey with those route options.
Commit to an attack or change position?

Hades’ Concentrated Knuckle strengthens repeated hits on the same enemy, so you weigh keeping up the pressure against dealing with another threat.

A roll in Dead Cells can carry you through enemies while invulnerable, but the gap before you can roll again makes you choose when to dodge and change position.
Spend now or preserve a reserve?

With Golden Touch active in Hades, money you hold earns income between regions, so you weigh buying now against having more to spend later.

Using Money Shooter and Gold Plating together in Dead Cells spends the same gold on shots and protection, so attacking eats into your defensive reserve.
Which attacks anchor the build?

In Hades, a weapon’s Aspect properties combine with divine Boons to decide which attacks you build the escape around.

In Dead Cells, Brutality, Tactics and Survival guide your build alongside weapon and mutation roles, shaping how you use melee, ranged attacks, defense and heavy weapons.
Which constraints do you accept after learning the loop?

In Hades, the Pact of Punishment lets you choose conditions for rewards. Tight Deadline makes you budget time across the escape, while Extreme Measures makes you adapt to changed bosses.

Boss Cells change healing supplies and other conditions in Dead Cells, while Cursed Biomes ask whether better equipment is worth facing curses rather than taking an uncursed route.

About the data and reviews
Table values are public Steam data; prices are from the United States store. Review points come from the 100 most helpful reviews of the past year for each game, and only points raised in at least three reviews are included. They do not represent every buyer's opinion.
These voices summarize the supplied review samples for each game, not proportions of all buyers. Opinions on the same topic can come from different playstyles and stages of progression.
