Who Is It For?

Megabonk is a survival roguelike where crossing a three-dimensional map shapes the build you can put together.
The offers you get along the way invite improvisation. At higher difficulty, though, players say the combinations that hold up become narrower.
What makes it fun
Your route shapes your build
Do you collect every XP gem, or move on to search for loot and the portal? On a randomly generated map, your route also affects how much time you have to grow stronger.
From bone throws to a barrage
As you combine Weapons, Tomes, and Items, even a bone throw can grow into a barrage that clears a mob. Each upgrade choice lets you decide how to increase the projectiles or strengthen their effects.
A new ability, a new route
Unlock a character and you can try a new way across the map: the monkey climbs walls, while the skateboarding skeleton gains speed as long as it avoids damage. Their abilities can shape your route and build.

A typical run
Choose a character with a unique ability and enter a randomly generated map.
Weapons attack automatically. Keep moving around enemies to collect XP and loot.
Use the random upgrades offered at level-up and the Items found along the way to decide what to develop.
Look for the Portal as you build up your character. Summon the boss there before the enemy pressure grows too high.
Defeating the boss lets you advance when the stage allows it. You can also stay for the Final Swarm, which starts when time runs out, and aim to survive or set a record.

Core systems
Randomly Generated Maps
Terrain and points of interest change each run. Time spent finding a route to the Portal also changes how much XP you can collect and use before the boss.
Do you collect the nearby XP, or leave it and head toward loot or the Portal? You make that call while moving.
Level Up and Upgrades
XP dropped by enemies raises your level. Each level offers random upgrades of varying rarity.
An offer might fill an immediate gap in damage or survival. It might instead give you an ability you plan to combine with something later.
Weapons, Tomes and Items
Builds combine automatic Weapon attacks, Tome stat modifiers, and special Item effects.
Weapon and Tome slots are limited. You can commit them to a planned combination or leave room to improve movement and survival.
Characters and Unique Abilities
Each character has a unique ability that changes how you cross the map and which builds suit them.
You can build around a character's strength or cover a weakness with Weapons and Tomes.
Portal and Final Swarm
The Portal summons the boss. The Final Swarm begins when time runs out and brings greater enemy pressure.
Spend longer preparing and accept the risk, or take your current build into the boss fight.
Quests and Challenges
Quests unlock characters, Weapons, and other content. Challenges such as Minimalist and Pacifist change a run's conditions.
You can use your usual approach or rebuild around a Challenge's conditions.

What sets it apart
Circling the horde will not get you to the Portal. You have to cross the three-dimensional map and look for loot along the way.
Attacks are automatic. Jumping, sliding, and gaining speed from the terrain still change how quickly you can explore.
Unlocks expand what you can use. Players also describe progress as resting on movement and choices made during a run more than on direct permanent stat boosts.
Learning curve and difficulty
Challenges such as Minimalist and Pacifist change the conditions you play under.
Movement skill shows during exploration. Dodge enemies, link stretches of terrain, and cut the time spent looking for the Portal.
Decide whether to leave nearby XP and keep moving or build more damage for the boss. The timing of your trip to the Portal matters too.
At higher difficulty, players say picking from the random offers is not enough. Recognizing workable Weapons and Tomes early helps.
Builds and playstyles
Map Runner
Invest in movement speed and jumping to find loot and the Portal. The recurring choice is whether to move on before collecting all the XP nearby.
Projectile Expansion
Increase projectile count and coverage to clear enemies spread across the map. This build appeals to players who enjoy seeing attacks grow until they fill the screen.
Ability-Led Build
Start with a character ability such as wall movement or acceleration, then choose your route and Weapons around it. Trying a newly unlocked character can be the goal of the run.

What longtime players say
After playing for a long time, the wait for new maps, characters, and balance changes becomes a concern for these players.
For dedicated players, the goal can shift to finding extreme Weapon and Item combinations that produce attacks close to the game's processing limits.
The same systems support an easygoing run. A record attempt gives these players a reason to keep refining their builds.
What players like
For a short session, players appreciate being able to start a run and clear enemies without much preparation.
Jumping and sliding across the three-dimensional maps is enjoyable in its own right for these players.
At higher difficulty or when chasing records, players enjoy tightening their routes, exploring faster, and learning which builds hold up.
Players also enjoy finding Weapon and Item combinations that spread attacks across much of the screen.
Unlocking characters and Weapons gives them new abilities and combinations to try on the next run.
Finishing a run can make these players want to start the next one immediately.
Common complaints
Players who have stayed with the game express frustration with the wait for new maps, characters, and balance changes.
In late runs and at higher difficulty, players report a narrow set of workable Weapon, Tome, and Item combinations. That makes an experimental build hard to carry through.
A late run can unravel when the needed upgrade does not appear or a sudden hit deals heavy damage. Players object to how abruptly a promising run can end.
For players who want to share a run with friends or family, the absence of listed cooperative play is a drawback.

Who it’s for
It suits players who want to keep jumping and sliding between automatic attacks, use the terrain, and search for loot and the Portal.
It also suits players who like choosing Weapons and Tomes from random offers to build around a character ability, then testing how Items work with that plan.
Who might not enjoy it
If you want to carry improvised builds through late runs, consider the reports that workable Weapon, Tome, and Item combinations become narrow.
Players seeking cooperative runs with friends or family, or looking forward to regular additions of maps and characters, may find those points frustrating.
