Game pageDisco Elysium - The Final Cut: Features, Player Impressions, and Who It Suits

You investigate a murder as an amnesiac detective in this dialogue-led RPG. As the case unfolds, you also decide what kind of person he will become.
Your experience depends on whether you prefer to pass Checks or let failed ones become part of the detective's story.
What makes it fun
Your skills speak up
Develop a skill and an inner voice such as Logic or Empathy starts chiming in, drawing your attention to details about people and your surroundings. The voices you cultivate change how you see the investigation.
A failed check has a story
Fail a red check and the detective may say or do something embarrassing; the outcome plays out as part of the scene. Carrying that unexpected failure forward gives your detective another part of his character.
Your answers shape the detective
In an interview, you can pursue the case politely or surprise someone with a bizarre reply. Their reactions help you decide who this amnesiac detective will become.

A typical run
You wake with no memory, choose the detective's strengths, and inspect both the room and his condition.
Once Kim joins you, you walk the scene, question residents, and examine physical evidence.
Skills interrupt conversations and investigations with observations or urges. You decide which voices to heed.
Difficult moments call for Checks. You can return to certain failed Checks after raising a Skill or changing the conditions through investigation.
Side-cases and Thoughts gather as you pursue the murder. Your answers also shape the detective's manner and political position.

Core systems
Skills
Skills are attributes that also speak as personalities inside the detective's head. Raising one may reveal clues and dialogue options, while making its assumptions and impulses louder.
You can raise a Skill for a Check you want to pass or for a voice you want to hear. That choice changes the details you notice and the detective's responses.
Checks
Checks resolve actions and conversational gambits through Skills. White Checks can be revisited when conditions change. Red Checks give you one attempt, and a failure may lead to a scene of its own.
You choose whether to roll now or improve your odds with clothing or Thoughts. After failing a White Check, you can return by raising the relevant Skill or changing its conditions through investigation.
Thought Cabinet
The Thought Cabinet lets you internalize ideas found in dialogue and observation. Those ideas affect abilities, reputation, conversations, and the story. A Thought can carry a drawback while it is being internalized.
Space is limited, and forgetting an internalized Thought costs a Skill point. You choose which ideologies or fixations stay in the detective's head, with an eye on both their effects and the person he is becoming.
Inventory
The Inventory holds clothing, tools, and consumables. Clothes alter Skills, tools help with investigations, and substances affect attributes. Certain scenes let you change clothes during dialogue before a Check.
You can keep the detective's usual look or assemble an awkward outfit for a Check. Relying on substances, or keeping him sober, also shapes the role you play.
Political Vision Quests
These quests follow the political position you express in conversation. They were added in The Final Cut.
You choose whether a political answer is useful in the moment or a position you are willing to play through, contradictions included.
Hardcore Mode
This official mode makes Checks harder and money scarcer. Healing items cost more and work less effectively, while completed Tasks grant slightly more experience.
You have to weigh clothes, Thoughts, substances, and possessions more carefully. The official description presents the mode as a return trip for detectives who already know Martinaise.

What sets it apart
There is no conventional combat system. Dangerous encounters also play out through conversation and Checks.
A high Skill does not supply correct answers on demand. Its louder voice might spot a clue or reinforce a bad assumption.
Failing a Check does not always close the way forward. Embarrassment or loss can follow the detective into the next scene.
Learning curve and difficulty
A visible Check need not be rolled immediately. Another conversation, a change of clothes or Thoughts, or further investigation may improve your odds.
Raised Skills also interrupt without being asked. Alongside the chance of passing a Check, you can consider which voice you want speaking in the detective's head.
You can carry on after a failed Red Check. The resulting scene may show a less flattering side of the detective than success would.
Hardcore Mode tightens Checks, money, and healing. It gives you more reason to consider when to internalize a Thought and which possessions to part with.
Builds and playstyles
Sober professional
Avoid alcohol and drugs while treating the case and its residents seriously. Follow the evidence and choose replies that preserve Kim's trust.
Ideological detective
Keep choosing a political position, then carry it into the Thought Cabinet and a Political Vision Quest. While investigating, you also decide how the detective explains Revachol and himself.
Failure-owning disaster cop
Attempt doubtful Red Checks and fold their failure scenes into the character. Leave the result in place and see what the damaged detective does next.

What longtime players say
On a return visit, different Skills and attitudes can change the information you pick up and the detective's replies in a familiar conversation. Reviewers describe wanting to see those differences.
After extended play, reviewers recall conversations with Kim and the residents more clearly than the steps they took to solve the case.
Reviewers with long playtimes kept thinking about Revachol's setting, its residents, and the exchanges inside the detective's head after finishing.
What players like
Reviewers remember the detective trying to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and scenes in which he moves forward while carrying what he has lost.
While walking through Revachol, reviewers found that the painted visuals, music, and English voices conveyed the city's exhaustion and its residents' feelings.
Reviewers who engaged with the political replies and residents' conversations appreciated being left to examine their own views on addiction and class, without a prescribed conclusion.
The people around the detective react to the attitude you choose. Reviewers enjoy seeing strange replies and political choices carry into the story.
Reviewers who enjoy questioning residents point to the distinct views and voices of minor characters. They gave those players a reason to keep reading long conversations.
Raising a Skill changes the commentary in the detective's head as well as his odds in a Check. Reviewers also enjoy the details and dialogue openings it lets them notice.
Reviewers enjoy failed Checks that leave the detective embarrassed or take a surprising turn. Those scenes can be funny enough to make them keep the result.
Common complaints
Reviews citing disputes over ownership and studio management discourage buying through the current Steam listing. These are the reviewers' views.
The opening brings abstract phrasing and unfamiliar political terms. Reviewers also found the exposition in longer side-cases tiring when they were not in the mood to read closely.
Reviewers seeking combat or frequent bursts of action found the walking and questioning slow. They describe losing interest before the investigation took hold.

Who it’s for
It suits players who want to raise Skills for the details the detective notices and the voices he hears, as well as for their Check odds.
It fits players willing to keep failed results and use the Thought Cabinet and Political Vision Quests to play a detective whose beliefs may contradict each other.
It suits those who want to question residents and follow side-cases to learn about their circumstances and Revachol's history.
Who might not enjoy it
If you want regular combat after brief conversations, the walking and questioning may feel slow. Skipping the political and historical material can also make the story harder to follow.
If a failed Check leading to an embarrassing scene is intensely frustrating, your response to Red Checks will shape how this plays.
