Automatic attacks do not mean the same rhythm: collecting experience and growing weapons on the move involves different decisions from shopping between waves to rebuild a loadout.

Comparing Vampire Survivors’ Arcanas and Darkanas with Brotato’s Ban system and Nightmare helps you see which kinds of preparation and constraints appeal to you.

What each game is

Vampire Survivors

In Vampire Survivors, attacks fire automatically, so you focus on positioning, routes for collecting experience and upgrade choices.

Choosing between close-range or ranged attacks, and between damage or health, means balancing killing power against survivability.

You can spread upgrades across an expanding arsenal or concentrate them on a main weapon.

Dropped experience gems and items do not disappear, leaving room to choose a route and collect them later rather than rushing in.

Between runs, gold buys power-ups such as Armour and Luck, and free refunds let you revise those preparations.

Unlock Arcanas with the Randomazzo relic to choose a starting card and pick from random offers in treasure chests during the run.

Brotato

In Brotato, you control an armed potato and shop after surviving each arena wave. The materials you collect become experience and equipment for the next assault in this survivors-like roguelite.

Weapons fire automatically by default, but manual aiming is available, letting you focus on movement and builds or take more control over where you shoot.

Combining the traits of characters such as Mage and Lucky with weapons and items gives you different ways to approach the same enemy waves.

After unlocking the Ban system and enabling it in Run Options, you can ban shop items during a run, choosing which unwanted offers to spend the limited ban slots on.

The Codex provides information on weapons, items and enemies, so you can compare their roles rather than simply taking an unfamiliar option.

Alongside solo play, local co-op is available, with assistance settings for enemy health, damage and speed that let you adjust the challenge for yourself or your group.

For experienced players

Vampire Survivors

Once you unlock the Darkana Stake to your Heart, choosing it replaces experience-gem leveling with weapons bought from a merchant using gold dropped by enemies.

With this Darkana, gold is also your health, so buying upgrades eats into the reserve keeping you alive.

Reviewers enjoy learning how weapons, passives, and evolutions fit together, then refining upgrade priorities as they test builds.

For long-term play, reviews contrast the pull of new unlocks with the fatigue of achievement cleanup; your reason to keep running matters.

Brotato

Once unlocked, Nightmare changes enemy lineups and events as well as health, damage and speed, testing builds that worked on earlier difficulties in a harsher arena.

Nightmare adds fog that limits your view and environmental projectiles that threaten routes apart from enemies, but you can turn those projectiles off in accessibility settings to ease that dodging burden.

Wounded starts with Tardigrade protection but dies to an unprotected hit, and removes regeneration- and health-related items from shops and crates during a standard run, shifting survival away from simply building enough durability to take damage.

The Rail Gun, unlocked by winning with Wounded, gains power while you remain unharmed during a wave and resets that buildup between waves, making damage avoidance a way to develop firepower.

About the data and reviews

Table values are public Steam data; prices are from the United States store. Review points come from the 100 most helpful reviews of the past year for each game, and only points raised in at least three reviews are included. They do not represent every buyer's opinion.

These voices summarize the supplied review samples for each game, not proportions of all buyers. Opinions on the same topic can come from different playstyles and stages of progression.
