Do you want to expand a factory around research, or build a base that supplies defense and assaults? Start with what you want to build next.
Which one is for you
Factorio is for you if…Consider Factorio if you want to connect mining, processing and research, then keep revising the factory you have grown. If expansion and defense belong in the same factory plan for you, read its sections on resource flow and preparing for enemies.
Mindustry is for you if…Consider Mindustry if you want to direct output into turret supplies and assault units, building production around taking enemy bases. Its systems suit players who want ammunition and power delivery to be part of defense, alongside turret placement.Screenshots

What each game is
Factorio
In base-game Factorio Freeplay, you grow a factory to research and launch a rocket.
Manual mining and crafting give way to production that connects transport belts with assembling machines.
As production expands into oil refining and construction robots, the factory also supplies resources for the next installations.
Expanding power introduces a choice between cheaper steam generation and a larger investment in less-polluting solar power.
Co-op supports dividing tasks, letting players agree on who expands production and who maintains the factory.
Mindustry
In Mindustry, supply chains make building materials, turret ammunition and combat units for defense and enemy-base assaults.
Turrets intercept enemies heading for the core, with ammunition, coolant or power supplied according to their needs.
Production serves both new construction and combat, so you weigh further expansion against getting defensive supplies in place.
On the offensive, you command manufactured units against enemy bases and use captured territory for cores and access to resources.
Serpulo and Erekir each have a separate planetary campaign, playable solo or in co-op.
For experienced players
Factorio
Construction robots still need supplied materials to expand from a blueprint, so reusing a layout also means arranging the materials that will make it real.
When switching from steam to solar panels and accumulators, check charge history to see whether stored energy lasts through the night. Daytime generation alone does not tell you whether to add panels or storage.
At a remote mining outpost, compare drill pollution with the pollution enemy spawners consume to send attackers. That helps estimate how long ammunition stocks will last and plan resupply alongside mining expansion.
Mindustry
Where coolant or lubricant can boost production, the decision is not just how many machines to place, but which production to strengthen by arranging an additional supply line.
A Force Projector's shield overheats under sustained damage. Optional coolant helps prevent that, so supplying an existing shield is an alternative to building more defenses.
With finite resources, set a unit to Rebuild and Hold Position to have it select ruins within building range without moving toward distant ones. Station it near supply facilities you want it to cover.
How they play differently
What is the next production line for?

Research toward a Freeplay rocket launch while making the equipment and components for each next step in the factory.

Direct production into turret supplies and units as well as building materials, supporting defense and assaults.
How does expansion connect to defense?

Pollution attracts enemies. When expanding the factory, weigh defense alongside the choice between adding steam power and investing more in solar.

Plan turret positions around the core together with the supply network delivering their ammunition and power.
What prepares you to push beyond the factory?

Fight enemies to secure room for the factory, then protect the expanded site with walls and turrets.

Manufacture and command units to take enemy bases, then use the territory for cores and access to resources.

If you're still deciding
For continued growth and redesign of the factory itself, revisit the Factorio sections on research and design.
For production directed toward defense and assaults, revisit the Mindustry sections on supply and units.
About the data and reviews
Table values are public Steam data; prices are from the United States store. Review points come from the 100 most helpful reviews of the past year for each game, and only points raised in at least three reviews are included. They do not represent every buyer's opinion.
These opinions come from the sample read for this article, not all reviews or buyers; an opinion in a review is not a guarantee of current mechanics.
